The 27th stage of the GR ®145 in France takes you from Saint-Amand-sur-Fion to Vitry-le-François. You cross the beautiful agricultural expanses of the Champagne plain. You will also see vineyards. Saint-Amand-sur-Fion, one of the most beautiful villages in the region, has shops, a magnificent 12th and 13th century church, charming farmhouses and half-timbered houses, as well as picturesque little streets that invite you to stroll. Its name, which leaves no one indifferent, comes from the river that runs through the village. Vitry-le-François, the end point of this stage, is a town founded by François I in 1545. You can discover an impressive 17th century collegiate church and several historic monuments. Shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a tourist information office, make it an essential stopover for recharging your batteries.

1Saint-Amand-sur-Fion Church

Also known as ‘La Merveille’ (The Marvel), this church is the iconic monument of this village in the Fion Valley, named after the stream that runs through the commune. Listed as a historic monument in 1875, its architecture and Gothic-style chevet are impressive. Saint-Amand-sur-Fion was once awarded the label ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’. Its half-timbered houses and farms, narrow streets and mills (most of which are privately owned) make it a village full of charm.

2Mont de Fourche

Located in the commune of Vitry-en-Perthois, Mont de Fourche offers what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful views in the Pays Vitryat. In the shade of the lime tree overlooking the Champagne vineyards, you will have an unobstructed view of the town of Vitry-le-François, your next stop.

3Chapel of Saint Genevieve

Remains of a chapel belonging to a former priory founded in 865 by the Bishop of Châlons.

4Vitry-le-François

Vitry-le-François, founded in 1545 by François I, is now a town with a population of around 12,000. As you stroll through its historic centre, you can explore its large Place d'Armes square and the impressive Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Collegiate Church. The Town Hall, its garden and arboretum are also among the places not to be missed. Don't hesitate to visit the town's Tourist Information Office to pick up some suggested itineraries!
