Owned by the Syndicat d'Aménagement Touristique du Lac du Der, the Ferme aux Grues is located on a former farm in one of the main feeding areas for Common Cranes. The primary aim is to encourage the cranes to stay on a dedicated plot of land on the farm by feeding them seeds for a short period of 3 weeks in February. This agrainage can help reduce any damage to spring seedlings on neighbouring plots. Each year, 7 tonnes of seed are distributed, reducing the amount consumed in fields in the area by 7 tonnes.
To find out more about this site, the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (League for the Protection of Birds), which manages the Ferme aux Grues (Crane Farm), is making its observatory available, which is permanently open to the public.
Access to the observatory is free of charge. It is important not to approach the site so as not to disturb the cranes as they feed.Photographic blinds placed within the feeding area can be hired under certain conditions by contacting the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (League for the Protection of Birds).
