On the spurs of the chalky plateau of Champagne Pouilleuse, Chavanges watches the Champagne landscape unfurling at its feet. The wood of the market place and the half-timbered houses with their fine entrances leads on to the white stone of the majestic St Georges church.
Dominated by the 29 metre bell-tower, the transept, choir and chapels provide an illustration of the evolution of the art of the stained glass window during the 16th century. The depiction in glass of the Apocalypse after the engravings of Dürer is a work well worth contemplating. |

On 1 January 2002, the District became the Communauté de Communes de Vitry-le-Francois (Vitry-Le-François Community of Communes) .
